In the ever-changing world of SEO and digital marketing, maintaining an edge requires a mix of speed and precision. Today we reveal the most recent developments that are shaping the digital landscape, straight from industry titans like Google, Microsoft, and the burgeoning domain of artificial intelligence. These innovations are critical to tailoring effective strategies that drive online performance and visibility. From changes in algorithms to advanced analytics tools, staying on top of these developments is crucial for any digital marketing looking to excel in a competitive and constantly evolving environment.

Google

Google will not index sites that do not work on mobile devices

Digital Marketing

Starting July 5, Google will stop indexing and ranking websites that are not accessible from mobile devices. This measure is part of the “mobile-first indexing” initiative that Google started in 2016 and was expected to be completed last October. However, full implementation has been extended to July 2024.

Google’s John Mueller explained on the official blog that the small set of sites that are still crawled with desktop Googlebot will be migrated to Googlebot for smartphones after this date. Mueller stated that “most of the web is already crawled this way and there will be no changes for those sites.” However, after July 5, 2024, Google will crawl and index exclusively with Googlebot Smartphone.

What does this mean for your site?

If your website is not accessible via a mobile device, Google will stop indexing it and, therefore, it will not appear in search results. Mobile accessibility is now a fundamental requirement for indexing in Google. Mueller emphasized that “if your site’s content cannot be accessed from a mobile device, it will no longer be indexable.”

Don’t be alarmed

This doesn’t mean that your site will be penalized if it’s not mobile-friendly, but it does mean that if your site simply won’t load on mobile devices, Google won’t index it. If your site only has a desktop version, but it loads correctly on a mobile device, you won’t have a problem.

Exceptions and continued desktop crawling

Google mentioned that it will occasionally continue to use Googlebot Desktop for certain product listings and Google for Jobs. Therefore, you may still see Googlebot Desktop in your server logs and reporting tools.

Why is this important?

For most website owners, this update will not pose a significant problem. However, if you work in SEO and your client has a site that doesn’t load on mobile devices, it’s likely that Google won’t crawl or index it after July 5. It is crucial to make sure the site is accessible from mobile devices and test it with Google Search Console’s URL inspection tool to ensure proper rendering.
